August 7

Postfestive day of the Transfiguration.

The holy venerable martyr Dometius. Born a pagan in Persia in the time of the Emperor Constantine, he was baptized as a young man. So enchanted was he with the True Faith that he left all earthly things and became a monk in a monastery near Nisibis. Made a deacon by his archimandrite, he became a solitary. He was martyred by the emperor Julian the Apostate, by being walled up alive into his cave. (363)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried": three for the feast, and three for the venerable martyr.

Tone 4, special melody Zvannyj svyše byv.  Before your noble suffering and cross, O Master, * You took your chosen apostles to Mount Tabor, * showing them your glory. * When they saw you transfigured and more brilliant than the sun, * they fell to the ground and cried out: * You are the eternal Light and the radiance of the Father; * and although unchanged, you appear In the flesh.

O God the Word, you are from all eternity, * and you are clothed with light as with a robe. * Transfigured before your disciples, you shone more brightly than the sun. * Moses and Elijah stood at your side * revealing you as Lord of the living and the dead. * They glorified your ineffable work of salvation, * your mercy and great compassion, * by which you saved the world which was lost in sin.

You were born of a virginal cloud and became flesh * and were transfigured on Mount Tabor, O Lord. * A bright cloud surrounded you; * the Father's voice clearly told the disciples that you are his beloved Son, * for you are the same essence as he and share his throne. * At this sight, Peter spoke with wonder and said: * It is good for us to be here. * He did not realize what he had said, * O most merciful Benefactor.

Tone 6, special melody Vsju otloživše. Putting aside * superstition, Persian corruption, and evil worship, * you wisely ran to God * who in the wisdom of his providence rules the heavens. * As an apostle, you healed the illnesses of the animals * as well as the infirmities of those who came to you in his name. * O Mediator of Christ, * pray with confidence that he may save our souls.

O venerable one, * you gave your life to the Lord * through fasting, all-night vigils, and ardent prayer, * unceasing hymns and angelic purity. * You received the power to perform miracles * because the Lord knows how to honor his servants. * Pray with confidence that he may save our souls.

You clothed yourself * with the armor of the cross, * and covered yourself with the indestructible shield of faith. * You were awesome to the hostile demons. * You routed them by the strength of your faith * and by your intercession before God. * You saved travelers from the harm which could come their way. * O Dometius, faithful servant of Christ, * pray with confidence that he may save our souls.

Glory, now and ever – Tone 6.  O Christ our God, when You willed to prefigure your resurrection, * you chose three disciples, Peter, James, and John; * and you went up with them to Mount Tabor. * At the moment of your Transfiguration, O Savior, * the mountain was flooded with light, * and your disciples fell with their faces to the ground; * for they could not bear the sight of your countenance * upon which no one may gaze, O Word. * Angels attended with trembling and awe; * the heavens were afraid; * and the earth shook to Its very foundations * when they saw the Lord of glory come upon the earth.

Entrance with censer. In place of the prokeimenon of the day, the following great prokeimenon:

Prokeimenon, Tone 7 (Ps. 113:11, 1-2, 3, 5). But our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he wills.
V.When Israel came forth from Egypt, Jacob's sons from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple.
V. The sea saw and fled; Jordan was turned back.
V. Why is it, O sea, that you fled; O Jordan, that you turned back?

But if if it is Saturday, we sing the usual prokeimenon of Saturday evening: The Lord reigns, he is clothed in majesty.

The aposticha are for the post-feast:

Tone 6, special melody Tridneven. In your compassion, O Christ, You appeared from the Virgin * in the humanity of the first Adam; * indeed you became the new Adam. * O my Savior, you were transfigured on Mount Tabor, * and thus you revealed your divinity.

Yours are the heavens and yours is the earth.

The crowns of grace and the law * were amazed to see your holy Transfiguration * on Mount Tabor, O Christ. * Together with them we bow down to you, * to the Father, and the Divine Spirit.

Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.

Creation is brightly illumined by your Transfiguration * in the presence of the holy apostles on Tabor, O Christ. * Indeed, you revealed to Moses and Elijah * that you are God, more radiant than the sun.

Glory, now and ever – Tone 5.  Come, let us ascend the mountain of the Lord * and go into the house of our God. * Let us contemplate the glory of his Transfiguration, * the glory of the only-begotten Son of God the Father. * From his light, let us receive light; * and raised up by the Holy Spirit, * let us sing the praises of the consubstantial Trinity forever.

The troparia:

Troparion of Dometius, Tone 4. Trained in asceticism on the mountain, * you were able to defeat the assaults of the devil * by the power of the Cross, O holy Dometius. * With great courage, you faced the battle * and crushed the hostile emperor with the sword of faith. * O glorious monk and martyr, * God crowned you for your asceticism and your good fight.

Glory, now and ever – Troparion of the Transfiguration, Tone 7.  You were transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, * revealing as much of your glory to your disciples as they could behold. * Through the prayers of the Theotokos, * let your everlasting light also shine on us sinners. * O Giver of Light, glory to you.
