Cantor training tapes by Father Michael Sopoliga

This set of nine cassette tapes was prepared by Father Michael Sopoliga, based on the 1970 Byzantine Liturgical Chant book and the printed publications of Monsignor William Levkulic. The tapes were sold by the Byzantine Seminary Press in Pittsburgh. Although they use older translations, and in many cases simplified or modified versions of the tones, they remain valuable for study of prostopinije as sung in the 1970's and 1980's, and for providing recorded versions of paraliturgical and other hymns.

The printed index accompanying the tapes noted that "Pace of the hymns are slower than normally sung in church for easy following." This MUST be kept in mind when listening to these recordings; many cantors have mistakenly believed that the tempo used in the recorded hymns was meant to be the actual tempo used in church, leading to very long, drawn-out execution of the chant.
