Spiritual songs > Hymns to the Mother of God
Christijane, proslavl'ajme
The text of this hymn to the Mother of God is that of Monsignor William Levkulic, who also published an English translation, All the faithful come before you. Text and music can be found in the MCI Byzantine Catholic Hymnal.
Sources
This hymn was printed in the Užhorod Pisennik (1913) as hymn number 145, with 18 verses
Father Stefan Papp printed five verses. with music, on page 90-91 of his collection, Duchovňi Pisňi (1969). The verses in this edition corresponded to verses 1, 5, 7, 10, and 11 of the text in the 1913 Pisennik, but with significant textual changes.
In 1978, Monsignor William Levkulic published the first three verses (without music) of the Papp text in The Divine Liturgy, a Book of Prayer. The same three verses, with music, were later published in the Marian Hymnal (1984).
Commentary
The melody given in Duchovňi Pisňi differs slightly from that in the Marian Hymnal setting:
- The rhythm of the second "slava" in the refrain is different; the Marian Hymnal setting uses a rhythm which correctly accents the English translation, but not the Slavonic.
- The Papp setting shows a slight flourish (on the word "preslavna") which is often heard when this hymn is sung in our parishes.
